The Cut
The parallel lines in this design – also known as a “step-cut” – are common in square and rectangular designs. However, Pieter applied them to a round stone.
The basis is uneven, a characteristic in Pieter’s designs.
The steplike pattern of this model gives the stone an even look, bold and to the point. This beautiful cut gives every piece of jewellery a remarkable look.

The Inspiration
The origin of this cut traces back to Paris, France. A renowned jeweller had made a golden snake that would be set with diamond tapes, a rectangular cut that tapers down from wide to small.
The body of the snake could be set with these rectangular stones without a problem, but the tail posed a problem for the tapes. A triangular shape would not fit either, as it sparkled too much.
Pieter designed a custom cut for the tail of the snake. While doing so, the job sparked his interest: usually a diamond is cut to shine as much as possible, but in this case, a cut that had less shine showed more of the diamond.
The end result is the Jacob’s Ladder.
